OPEN BOOK MANAGEMENT
Our approach to running a company was developed to help close one of the biggest gaps in business: the gap between managers and employees. We call our open-book approach The Great Game of Business. What lies at the heart of The Game is a very simple proposition:
The best, most efficient, most profitable way to operate a business is to give everybody in the company a voice in saying how the company is run and a stake in the financial outcome, good or bad.
Good to Great author Jim Collins says, “The whole concept of The Great Game of Business is beautiful –consistency, alignment, and transparency, infused with core values and brought to life with powerful mechanisms. It is inspired and inspiring.”
In some ways, we see “business” as incidental to what we do. Our real business is education. We teach people about business and give employees the knowledge and tools help them understand:
- what winning means in business,
- how to track, measure and improve performance and
- how to share in a self-funding stake in the outcome…to win or lose as a team.
Our ultimate goal is to create a “business of business people” who think, act and feel like owners. Open-book management is one of the key components of our approach, though it is only a portion of our overall process.

The SRC Story
In 1983 along with 12 other managers, Jack Stack scraped together $100,000 in cash, borrowed $8.9 million and transformed a failing division of International Harvester into one of the most successful and competitive companies in America. Under Mr. Stack’s leadership and Open-Book Management approach (later coined The Great Game of Business), this formerly failing company has now become SRC Holdings Corporation, a thriving company of 1,000 engaged employees in 17 business units across a variety of industries producing over $300 million in annual sales. A company that has increased its stock price from 10 cents per share in 1983 to over $199 in 2010. To learn more about The SRC Story, Click here: The SRC Story
