SRC ELECTRICAL LLC recognized for energy efficiencyPosted on January 18, 2012 by admin
Annual energy reduction from new lights equivalent to taking 11 cars off the road
As the result of a light-related electricity reduction at its Springfield, Mo., facility, SRC Electrical has received Orion Energy Systems’ Environmental Stewardship Award. Orion & Innovative Facilities Solutions presents the award to companies that achieve significant environmental benefits through the use of Orion’s energy-efficient technology.
SRC replaced its high-intensity discharge (HID) light fixtures with Orion’s Compact Modular™, high-intensity fluorescent (HIF) technology. As a result of the lighting change, the company is expected to cut its light-related electricity costs by more than $5,505—every year. Orion estimates that, over a 20-year period, the lighting system will allow SRC to save upwards of $110,000. This assumes electricity rates will remain the same.
The lighting change is projected to reduce light-related electricity consumption by more than 68,808 kilowatt-hours (kWh) every year. IFS and SRC worked with City Utilities(Springfield, Mo) on securing an energy efficient incentive to help fund the project.
These figures are for the company’s production facility alone located at 2720 N. Commerce Dr. in Springfield Missouri.
“In addition to the money we’re saving, there has been an increase in light output,” says Lou Mustari, SRC’s Quality Manager. “Employees have been very positive about the change at the facility.” “In addition to the benefits of the system installed, working with IFS was a pleasure!” commented Mustari. “We look forward to helping SRC in the future with reducing their carbon footprint while saving thousands of dollars in their operations and not compromising their performance with any of the energy efficient measures we work with them on”, stated Tom Ries, President of IFS.
With cost savings come significant environmental benefits, as SRC has drastically reduced the amount of harmful greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. As a result of decreased energy consumption, SRC is helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 45 tons annually, according to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates. The reductions are the air-scrubbing equivalent of a 13-acre forest, according to the EPA.
“We’re delighted about the award,” Mustari says. “Saving this much money, and reducing our environmental impact at the same time, is a win-win.”
The environmental and cost benefits to SRC are possible because of Orion’s patented, high-efficiency technology that reduces light-related electricity use by 50 percent while producing 50 percent more light than the industry standard high-intensity discharge lights. Orion’s technology also is easy to install and maintain.
